Battery Safety Standards and Certification Organization
First BATSO certification
(Susanne Bruesch)

The Suzhou Phylion Battery Co. was awarded China’s first Battery Safety Standards and Certification Organization, BATSO certificate in March 2010 by Germany’s TÜV Rheinland Group.

A BATSO test seal demonstrates that your battery has been tested according to relevant BATSO standard(s), including a compliance with all relevant UN tests. BATSO certification requires transport safety tests, electrical property safety tests and mechanical property safety tests.
Mr Feng, the general manager of Suzhou Phylion Battery’s bicycle business division, said: “Given the growing competitiveness of the European lithium-ion battery market, BASTO certification will provide us with a significant market advantage. It can only strengthen the confidence of overseas customers in Phylion’s quality, and promote mutual communication and cooperation.”

Lithium-ion batteries, the new highlight of green electric bicycles. Thanks to rising oil prices and greater environmental consciousness worldwide, the advantages of electric bicycles as a mode of transport are becoming increasingly apparent, with more than 10 million electric bicycles being produced every year to meet global demand. The lithium-ion batteries used to power these bicycles have recently gained favourable attention, thanks to their light weight, long service life, high-energy density and smaller environmental impact relative to traditional lead-acid batteries. At the same time, however, a number of lithium-ion battery fires and recalls have also aroused global wariness about the security of these battery products, and the EU continues to adjust its market access threshold. Manufacturers, importers and distributors, will soon have to answer questions on how to verify and ensure product quality and security or help end users to select the best products?

BATSO

The BATSO 01 test manual is a cooperation project between ExtraEnergy (Germany), ITRI (Taiwan) and renowned testing organizations TÜV Rheinland (Germany) and UL (USA). BATSO’s goal is to increase the safety of new battery technologies. Standardized testing methods guarantee fast and economic battery testing, and the BATSO test seal helps all parties involved in the light electric vehicle business, including manufacturers, export agencies and importers, as well as the end user, to locate and use safe and reliable batteries. TÜV Rheinland has now opened China’s first and only testing center offering light electric bicycle Li-ion battery safety tests and providing a product testing and certification service in line with BATSO standards.
